FROM THE ROADSIDE TO THE SPEZIAL

Some stories don’t need to come from somewhere else. Sometimes the best inspiration is sitting right in front of you.

For our first footwear collaboration with adidas Originals, Fresh Rags looked home to Florida and a tradition that has been part of life throughout the South for generations: Hot Boiled Peanuts.

Found at roadside stands, neighborhood markets and gas stations throughout Florida, boiled peanuts are more than a snack. They’re part of the landscape. A handwritten sign on the side of a backroad. A steaming cup or bag passed through a window. Regular or Cajun. A quick stop that somehow becomes part of the memory of the drive itself.

It’s humble, familiar and unmistakably Southern.

For us, that made it the perfect story to tell.

SOUTHERN CAVIAR

The concept began with a nickname long associated with boiled peanuts throughout the South: “Southern Caviar.”

Rather than simply reference the peanut itself, we wanted to capture the entire world surrounding it — roadside stands, hand-painted signage, burlap sacks, weathered materials, gas station graphics and the earthy colors of peanuts fresh out of the pot.

That story became the adidas Originals x Fresh Rags Handball Spezial “Hot Boiled Peanuts.”

Built on one of adidas Originals’ most iconic silhouettes, the Spezial combines earthy brown tones and contrasting textures with details inspired by the shells, seasonings and visual language surrounding the Southern staple. Hits of red, yellow and white reference the handmade signs and packaging commonly found at roadside stands, while “Southern Caviar” branding ties the entire concept together.

The goal was never to simply put a Florida-inspired colorway on a sneaker.

We wanted the shoe to feel like a piece of Florida.

813 PAIRS. FOR THE 813.

The “Hot Boiled Peanuts” Handball Spezial was producedin just 813 individually numbered pairs, a direct reference to Tampa Bay’s 813 area code.

Each pair was individually numbered from 001/813 through 813/813, permanently connecting the project to the region that inspired it.

For Fresh Rags, a store born in Tampa Bay in 2008, that detail meant something.

Our city and our region have always been central to who we are. We wanted this project to show that meaningful stories can come from the places, traditions and everyday experiences surrounding us.

MORE THAN A SNEAKER

From the beginning, “Hot Boiled Peanuts” was designed to be bigger than the footwear.

The project expanded into a complete collection of apparel, socks and headwear, carrying the same roadside Southern visual language throughout the capsule.

A long-sleeve moto-inspired jersey, convertible cargo pants, tees, socks and collaborative FRSH x ’47 headwear helped build a complete world around the Handball Spezial.

Every piece played a role in telling the same story.

Because for us, a collaboration isn’t simply about putting two names on a product. It’s about creating something with a point of view and giving people an experience that allows them to understand where the idea came from.

THE STOP & SHOP

If the inspiration came from the roadside, the launch needed to live there too.

On August 8, 2026, Fresh Rags and adidas Originals brought “Hot Boiled Peanuts” to life with an immersive Stop & Shop activation in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Rather than host a traditional sneaker release, we created our own interpretation of a Florida roadside stop, bringing together footwear, apparel, food, music, design and community within one environment.

Guests were served complimentary hot boiled peanuts while the complete collection was presented throughout the space, turning the story behind the sneaker into something people could actually walk into and experience.

It wasn't simply a backdrop for the release.

The activation was part of the collaboration itself.

It gave us an opportunity to take something incredibly familiar to people throughout Florida and the South and present it through an entirely different lens.

FROM TAMPA BAY TO THE WORLD

What began with something as simple as a roadside cup of boiled peanuts became one of the most significant projects in Fresh Rags history.

On launch day, all 813 individually numbered pairs sold through.

But the sell-through was only one part of what made the project meaningful.

For 18 years, Fresh Rags has believed that our city, our region and the people around us are filled with stories worth telling. We don't believe sneaker culture has to look somewhere else for inspiration when there is so much authenticity right outside our own doors.

“Hot Boiled Peanuts” was our opportunity to take something many of us grew up seeing on the side of the road and give it an entirely new platform.

A Southern tradition. A Tampa Bay story. 813 pairs.

Served hot.

BUILT BY OUR COMMUNITY

A project like “Hot Boiled Peanuts” is never the work of one person. From the earliest creative conversations to the final campaign, activation and launch, this project was brought to life by an incredible group of people who believed in the story and helped us tell it authentically.

A special thank you to Adidas Originals for believing in Fresh Rags and giving us the opportunity to take a piece of our culture and tell that story on a much larger stage.

Thank you to Nino Breeze & Shay, whose presence and artistry helped bring the personality of the campaign to life, and Shay, who helped us visually tell the story through the campaign editorial.

Our creative vision was brought together alongside Jaise, Creative Director, with motion and video work by Motion Minds and photography by Junior “Mind of JR” and Marissa of Field Seven / WTR Cooler Studios. Each brought their own perspective to the project and helped translate an idea that started with something as simple as roadside boiled peanuts into the imagery and film that ultimately represented the collaboration.

A special thank you to the Chevron gas station in South St. Petersburg for allowing us to use an authentic piece of our own neighborhood as part of the campaign. It mattered to us that this story wasn't recreated to look like Florida somewhere else. We wanted to shoot it here, around the places and environments that inspired it in the first place.

Thank you to The Burg for keeping the boiled peanuts hot, Press Go Studios for helping us transform the concept into a physical Stop & Shop experience, Zaki and Puppet Theater, Ali and G-Man, Eric and ’47, DJ Joey Franchise, and everyone else who contributed their time, talent and energy to bringing the project to life.

And finally, thank you to the entire FRSH Team, our friends, our families, Tampa Bay and everyone who showed up on August 8, purchased a pair, wore the collection, shared the story or supported Fresh Rags from somewhere around the world.

813 pairs were made. 813 pairs found a home.

But more important than the number was proving something we've believed since opening our doors in 2008:

Our city has stories worth telling.

Our community has the talent to tell them.

And sometimes inspiration is sitting right on the side of the road.

From Tampa Bay, with love.
